\nDonald Hall, 1928
\n When I walk in my house I see pictures,
\nbought long ago, framed and hanging
\n\u2014de Kooning, Arp, Laurencin, Henry Moore\u2014
\nthat I\u2019ve cherished and stared at for years,
\nyet my eyes keep returning to the masters
\nof the trivial\u2014a white stone perfectly round,
\ntiny lead models of baseball players, a cowbell,
\na broken great-grandmother\u2019s rocker,
\na dead dog\u2019s toy\u2014valueless, unforgettable
\ndetritus that my children will throw away
\nas I did my mother\u2019s souvenirs of trips
\nwith my dead father, Kodaks of kittens,
\nand bundles of cards from her mother Kate.
